Someone else got carried away and mentioned all kinds of bodily noises,
etc., that could disrupt a jazz affair. That's going too far, I believe. We
are discussing more about the churchy silence of a classical concert vs jazz
functions, and jazz functions tend to be a bit more casual, thank goodness!

Most bands that play proper concerts in proper concert halls will agree that
the silence is equal to that of a classical concert, at least when you walk
out onto the stage. First thing I try to do is break the ice, and get a
little laughter. Maybe the concert is on a long weekend or during an
important football game, so the patter will go something like "so none of
you could afford to go away this weekend, either?"....or "afford to buy a tv
set, either?"

You won't find that kind of audience connection in the classical world
outside of the Albert Hall concerts they do in the U.K. at a special time of
the year.

I certainly don't want to ever get too serious about myself, in my music or
in my business, or in my person. I see people every day on the streets with
long faces. Not for me!

Tom said it: "We play fun good natured good time jazz".
