During the course of Gary Burton's concert at the 2006 Glasgow International Jazz Festival, but not before, his band's luggage and travelling instruments began to arrive a few miles away at the airport. The possibilities are amazing, a solo pianist labouring till the next flight comes in, and the next, and afterwards... Well, at least Burton and his men didn't need to transport things from their hotel to the airport the following morning.
Of course there was the famous story Stephane Grappelli told, of how he and his band at the time were tricked into making a surprise appearance at a nudist ball, and the surprise turned out to be that the only naked people there were Steph and his men... Imagine this at the airport, the police being summoned because of these naked men, only to find that a flight had landed and they by now all had their jockey shorts on, quickly collected from the carousel and soon to be enhanced by other layers. .
Which is of course nonsense, since airports are these days full of police. and the one where the Burton luggage had arrived in vain was actually attacked from the road about a year after the concert. End of levity. except low price Irish and British airlines have more recently been trying to encourage passengers to carry on board as much as they can -- as long as it's in one bag.
