Gene, listen to the last notes of the soloist before you (still keeping in
your mind the flow of the melody).  If the soloist before happens to play a
"lick" (a riff), pick up on that & repeat it.  Makes for good fun, and shows
that you were listening to your fellow musician.  However, that will
probably come later.  Best just to keep that melody in your head.

Play with your record collection....every day!

Someone mentioned the tailgate slur into your solo.  Ok, but can sound very
repetitive if you use it often.  

Someone else mentioned "ordering of solos".  A band that plays a lot will
want to mix up the solo order just not to be bored, or be boring.  If you
always follow the same guy/gal, you'll soon get in a rut.
