Just noticed another internet site that might also be helpful in  
tracking down songs, and composers, by year.

For example, see:  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1920_in_music

Then, if you want just change the year in the above link to see songs  
and composers of popular tunes (and others)  in any other year.

Not sure how far back you can go, but I searched back to 1890.
