[Dixielandjazz] Great Press on a Youth Banjo Band

Hi List,
A couple of friends that I sent this to off-list have suggested I post it  on 
this list.  It is not everyone's idea of OKUM, but I think many will  agree 
it is a very positive article about getting kids involved in music.   How did 
it happen?  Personally, I think it happened  because the angels in charge of 
news stories like banjo  music.  A one paragraph press release was sent a bunch 
of places trying to  get some press to help with fall recruiting of more 
students.  For reasons  not known to me, an article on the press release was 
assigned to the classical  music critic at the St. Louis Post Dispatch for a story.  
She worked very  carefully to get correct info.  I also have some classical 
music background  which maybe helped.  If you check out this article, be sure 
and check out  the audio slide show.  The photos and comments by the kids are 
just  delightful.
 
One final comment.  I'm sure the fact that Don Dempsey and I do this  at no 
charge very much contributed to getting the PR.  If we charged we  would be 
just one more business.  The kids/families have to pay something  for everything, 
but very little.  Hopefully it is a beginning to recreating  demand.
