Subject: [Dixielandjazz] Bach's Tocatta & Fuge in D Minor
To: DJML <dixielandjazz at ml.islandnet.com>Four trombones play Bach?
I remember hearing Slide Hampton a couple of times with DG and deploring the lack of opportunity to hear him solo among so many other gifted musicians.
Then I got a review copy of ....Slide Hampton leading a big band of seventeen trombones plus rhythm!!!. It was like loving someone and never being allowed to be alone together with them (and, admittedly, a rhythm section).!!! Then again, maybe it's not? I do seem to remember that Slide did score a passage of OKOM somewhere on that CD. Seriously!
It's spelled Toccata, and there are also people who doubt that Bach composed this particular masterpiece, and also some who don't think it was composed initially for organ.
From: Stephen G Barbone <barbonestreet at earthlink.net>
It's not OKOM, but may be of interest to the trombonists on the DJML.
This is a trombone quartet version of the famous Bach piece and is
just wonderful. Written for organ, played by the Extreme Trombone
Quartet.
