The pity of it is that some "Old Guard" fans get very selfish.
My experience in starting a youth banjo band this past six months is that
the majority membership in the banjo world may be primarily interested in
maintaining their own world until the last day. BUT those with a generous heart
and a care for the next couple of generations are extraordinary supporters!
Those generous few are just bowling me over with both their moral support and
their financial support. Restores my faith.
What I have been unable to achieve is to find the local person/s who will
try the same start-up with youth Dixieland. It may not be as easy. The home
schooled population has interest in a banjo band for ages 9 - 11 (have not had
any older than 11 who are home schooled apply for this even though it's
available). For kids 5 - 8, they are interested in ukulele groups. Do they have
an interest in Dixie and horn groups? I don't know.
