Online dictionaries define stomp as:

1. A dance involving a rhythmical heavy step.
2. A lively jazz tune with a strong beat.

And other sources indicate that stomp originally described a dance  
performed by Southeastern American Indians. And that slaves prior to  
1865 performed boot dances called stomping.
