Hello Jim:

Perhaps defect is too strong a word to characterize Gillespie, or Turk, or
Davison or Bechet and the manner in which they play? "Incorrect", might be
better? IMO a "defect" is a shortcoming or deficiency that implies an
inferior result, which does not describe their playing accurately.

Bechet may have played incorrectly, and Armstrong may have sung incorrectly
and Davison / Gillespie may have had incorrect embouchures, and Bix /
Eldridge may have used incorrect fingering. However they were all Great
players, leading innovators, and they spoke great jazz.

BTW, our trombonist today was Clint Sharmin. During the past several years
he has regularly toured the world with Liza Minelli and I think was with her
in Spain earlier this year. Have you ever run across him in your backing of
Liza? Neat guy, great trombone player.

Cheers,
Steve Barbone
