A sarrusophone is an obsolete woodwind instrument with a brass body
having small conical bore and saxophone-like keywork which uses a
double reed rather than a single reed mouthpiece. It was conceived as
a family of Bb and Eb instruments and intended to replace the oboe and
bassoon in military and other outdoor ensembles. The only one that had
any wide commercial support was the EEb contrabass sarrusophone, and
that is the one Sidney Bechet used on his famous one-man-band
recording.
