Wikipedia has a nice write-up on this, including the many uses of the 
tune in radio programs.  The original recording was in the UK by Henry 
Hall and His Orchestra in 1932, with vocal done by Hall.

Some where else I read that the original recording was exceptionally 
well done and was used to demo sound systems for many years.
