Myths:
It's historically true that prostitution hardly diminished in New Orleans
when the District was closed - the whores just moved elsewhere unhindered by
NO's finest who had too much to lose. That farrago of nonsense, the New Orleans
movie, just ignored the truth in typical Hollywood fashion. The loudest music
in the District was the ringing of cash registers. Most of the music was
provided in the nearby "Tango Belt" to which Louis Armstrong was no doubt
referring. In any case there were TWO Districts in effect since apart from whores
blacks were, shall we say, unwelcome in the white District.
