Actually, the "Kansas City" style is a unique marker in the development of big bands, and the post-1920's jazz styles. The riff is a prominent feature of the style, and it's been well documented as, if not originating, certainly coming into importance with the KC sound. Moten, the Coon-Sanders Nighthawks, the Blue Devils (Walter Page) were among the best known instigators, and Basie took it out on the road. The Nighthawks were radio staples in the early 30s.

Unfortunately, those who are casual jazz fans think the homogeneous swing/unbop/smooth/fusion crap that's heard in many clubs is "Kansas City Jazz".

Get hold of the Altman movie, and "Last of the Blue Devils", with Basie, Joe Turner, Hootie, and a whole bunch of others (including Ray Earhart, who played with the New Red Onion Jazz Babies toward the end of his life...what a great player, and raconteur!)

steve 'was at the world premier of Last of the Blue Devils in 1979' hoog
