Check out the Robert Altman film, "Kansas City". While the music isn't necessarily totally ideomatic in performance, the idea of the jam-style performance with arrangements that more or less fall together on the bandstand (with a big band) is one of the markers of the KC style.
Mediocre movie, great music, even if it isn't completely true to the style. "Indiana", though, is about as true as it can get. Check out Nicholas Payton using a plastic pitcher as a mute, and Joshua Redman's black lacquer tenor. Can you say anachronistic? Still...fun movie. The music over the credits is spectacular.
