An addendum to Larry's post on mailing flyers, post cards, etc.  There  are 
indeed places who do keep these on file.  I know from both personal  experience 
and anecdotes of others that you may get a gig inquiry even 2 - 3  years 
after you send the initial flyer.  Maybe six months ago I had the  only email 
inquiry I have gotten as a result of mailing flyers.  (All other  contacts have 
been by the activity director phoning.)  At any rate, I  answered that email as 
best I could and heard nothing more.  Two days ago I  got a follow-up email 
asking for a specific date and as of today that gig is  confirmed.  My point one 
more time, gratification is not always  instant.
