[Dixielandjazz] Band logo displays

As other people said, hold onto your hats. That's why I like the Corrugated
plastic signs I made up for several people here for a Manhasset stand.
There is no more wind surface than the stand itself so wind doesn't really
affect it any more than the stand by itself.

Personally I don't care for banners in a music situation because of that
very reason. But, if someone must hang a banner in a windy place I can send
the drawings and instructions that I give my customers to do that. They are
mostly to keep the banner from being damaged though.

If a band uses banners they need to put a heavy duty bungee in each corner
so the thing can spill the wind in a gust or what ever it's tied to will
become like the Santa Maria and go sailing off. If you must tie off a
banner with rope you use the top grommets and the bottom ones need to be
tied off with bungees so the wind can spill. The other thing people do is
cut 4-6" D holes in the banner to spill the wind which is an ugly solution.

Some years ago the AF band I was in had a fairly large sign about 2 1/2' x 3
1/2'. It had a frame and Plexiglas on it so it wasn't light. It was on a
tripod stand and a gust sent that thing off into the audience like a
Frisbee. Unless you have a lot of liability insurance I don't recommend
anything that will sail off and hurt someone. It isn't worth it. When I
went into the sign business I refused to do any installations of signs. For
two reasons. The first being the liability of a sign blowing or falling off
into someone or something and the second is that in my county there are
licenses that a business has to have along with a lot of insurance.

In another case I had just designed a mud flap for the Swift trucking
company and they ordered several thousand. One of the flaps went sailing
off a truck and went through a windshield and they got sued. Now they use
another one of my designs that doesn't have their name on it.

The best thing is go small or not at all in windy conditions. 12 x 18 is a
good size. You could also make a 12 x @24" vertical sign that would wire
tie to a mike stand. Easy to attach and easy to remove with wire cutters.
I have been thinking about doing that with a piece about 8" wide with just
Larry vertically on it or possibly a thin one with my website on it.

I don't know if you use monitor speakers but you might have a sign attached
to the sloping side or back of them. In the case of a floor monitor it
would work out pretty well as a sign mount.
