[Off list. Don't want to bore them!]
Dear Steve,
Herewith the label credits for all the Armstrong Hot Five 'n' Sevens as
printed on the original 78 Okeh issues.
Unfortunately, it doesn't really answer the current question as to who
wrote what.
I personally believe that all those titles shown [Hardin] are her
definitely her compositions.
I have marked with an asterisk * the tunes I believe are Louis
compositions.
All the other titles shown [Armstrong] I suspect/believe are Lil's.
Why? Just a feeling in my [musical] water, as they say. No real proof,
other than Lil's claims in some instances.
However, I certainly accept that Louis' playing-genius would have
transformed ALL the tunes into classics.
Another thought. If Louis had composer talent, how come it was never
turned up or exploited by Fletcher Henderson in the year Louis
(1924-25] was with him. Remember, Lil remained in Chicago for much of
this time. Louis' playing from this period is magnificent, but often
overlooked by all but Louis diehards. Like me.
I will send this off to Audrey Van Dyke later today, as she may have
sheet music with copyright details to prove or disprove my thoughts on
the matter. Then we can hit the list!
