[Dixielandjazz] Tip for "charity" gigs

Many of us are asked repeatedly to donate our music to various charities.
Here is one way to handle it which works well for Barbone Street.

"I appreciate the offer to play and as you might imagine, we get asked to
play lots of gigs free. Since the members of my band are professionals who
make their living in music performance, I pay them for every gig they do."

"So when I donate to a couple of my favorite charities, the money comes out
of my pocket. This year, I've already donated several, am tapped out and
cannot afford to donate any more band performances."

"It may be possible for you to find an "angel" who would sponsor the band."

"In that instance, we would be glad to cut you a big break from our normal
performance fees and in effect donate it to your cause. The event you
mention would normally be charged at $1400. I would be happy to cut that in
half for you and bill it at $700. (NUMBERS BY WAY OF EXAMPLE PICK YOUR OWN
TO QUOTE DEPENDING UPON TIME AND DISTANCE)"

"Let's work it out."

You have nothing to lose by trying a similar approach and will probably gain
a few gigs without giving them away.

Cheers,
Steve Barbone
