Here's a snip from Bill Haesler :
"According to Eric Townley's book 'Tell Your Story', the mythical
mile-or-mo bird is one which flies backwards because it is more
interested in where it has been than where it is going."
I have heard the anecdote concerning this bird many times, but here in the UK the reason usually given for its backward flight was that it lived on a diet of fearsomely hot curry and flew backwards to keep its rear end cool.
