I have always considered it practically as different horns.  Classically
trained trombonists normally have even a different sound/tone.  

Holding one type of player above or below the other is also nonsensical,
particularly if you consider them to be as different horns altogether.

I remember my Dad changing his tune after his good friend...top trumpeter
with the Los Angeles Symphony....heard our first recording.  He said to my
Dad "I wish I could play like that".

Shock, I'm sure, to my Dad, who always said any of those "good players"
could do what we do!

P.s.  My Dad heard me play Dixieland live once when I was 16.  Next time he
"heard" me live was when I was 64 yrs old & he was in a wheelchair, and he
couldn't figure out where the stage was or who was on it.      :<
