Hi djmlers!
As I indicated a few weeks ago, the Dixieland Jazz Society of the Desert's annual festival is on for this week-end. Please go to www.desertjazz.org for details. My band "Dick Broadie and his Unusual Suspects" will be playing at the Trinidad Hotel from 9 pm to 1 am where a very big jam session is anticipated. Lots of the musicians at the festival are staying at that hotel and have promised to join my guys.
At the Mizell Senior center this am, more than 200 showed up to hear 30+ musicians jazz at my weekly session. We got nice press coverage in the local paper last week-end and were filled to capacity the last few weeks even before the story broke. I have no idea how many came who couldn't find parking or couldn't get into the room if they did get parking.
It gets a bit ragged when you have all those guys blowing on the out chorus of Indiana without a chart (sheet music) in sight. But we sure do have fun. Our talent ranges from retired school teachers who play well with music (that we don't have) to members of such as the Les Brown alumni association. Band members today came from 17 states and 4 countries. Needless to say, we don't do quite that well in the summer when it's 120 degrees here. If you want to jam with us, things do thin out quite a bit in the summer but you're welcome to come anytime.
If you ever land in Palm Springs, drop me a note and I'll be happy to tell you what's going on. The jazz festival promises to be lots of fun this week-end and I'm sure we'll have enough room for you if you chose to attend. Would love to see you here.
