I heard the old PHJB in the 1970's, or rather one of them (they
visited Israel twice), with De De and Billie Pierce, Willie
Humphreys, Jim Robisnon, and they were wonderful. The first time was
before I had a car, so I travelled by public transport, and then
returned by taxi, and it was worth it! I went to haifa (80 km), and
twice to Caesarea (much nearer, but public transport there was very
poor, so that it was difficult to get there and even more so to get
home). The second time I travelled to Caesarea and Tel-Aviv (same
line-up, but Ms. Pierce already needed a walker). In 1980 I visited
the Hall, and heard some excellent and (on another day), some mediocre
music.
Then, when the olg guys passed away, or became unable to play, the
band stagnated, and its music became repetetive and boring.
I haven't heard the current band, but it has been compared to the
Rebirth Brasss Band, a band whose music I find appalling.
Cheers
