Hi Shiek
I tried sending this to you off list but got a Delivery status
notification failure for your address. I decided to go via DJML

Hi Sheik,
List member Sue Loerchen from New Orleans is a
specialist in the revival of the social dances of Buddy Bolden's time.
She may be a useful contact. Glad you are getting something from the
books. ( I assume you included the "Birth of Jazz: Reviving the Music
of the Bolden Era" in your acquisitions.)
At the end of the concert I referred to in my original post a lady came
upstage and told me she was involved in a group reviving the old dances
here. She was most interested in our performances of the mazurka and
quadrille. The High Society tempo question is interesting. I suppose
you've seen Dr. Souchon's comments that the Oliver band version evolved
over a period of time from a slow march to the supper table to the
quicker version on their recording. (It is in R. Gottleib's Reading
Jazz see p 364 of Exploring Early Jazz)
I'd be very interested in your conclusions.
best wishes
Dan Hardie
