R.I.P. Nellie:

A nice lady with a lot of unused talent that was sadly overlooked or even shunned by TRADITIONAL JAZZ ORGANIZATIONS.

I tried to book her along with anita O'Day and Hadda Brooks, a classic Trio of Jazz Divas if there ever were any, and not one society even so much as responded to book them. Sadly, because they were still singing wonderfully up until shortly before their deaths.

I suppose it's just easier to talk about old legends than actually work to promote them and pay them real homage by hiring them for events to perform for the very folks that are supposed to be their fans.

Gee I Wonder if Louis and King Oliver, and Jack Teagarden and our other alleged heros like Lu Watters and Turk Murphy would be hired if they were still alive, probably not. To expensive no doubt.

It is indeed a crying shame that nobody booked These ladies for shows because they still had much to offer and sang well in spite of their years.

Cheers,

Tom Wiggins
