Agree with Mr. Barbone on this one.  Mic'ing the clarinet is helpful  in 
really bringing the lower register through on both ensemble play and  solo's.  
Depending on the venue acoustics  I will often play a  way from the Mic in a lot 
of upper register stuff, but need the Mic to be heard  well in the lowest E 
through E range.  
 
I picked up a Leblanc Big Easy which has an extremely fat bore, cut back to  
#2 - #2 1/2 reeds and starting using the 5JB and picked up considerable volume 
 overall and crispness in the top range so it all makes a difference.  Along  
with the playing level of your frontline compatriots.
