[Dixielandjazz] Playing in a Professional Band & Practice

Have you ever heard of Sandy Brown, one of the best and most original
clarinet players to emerge from the jazz revival (he was Scottish, but
i've refrained from saying "British revival" on purpose).
Sandy was born in India, and started playing with records (just like
Bix).  Without any proper teahsr, he had to figure everything by
himself.  By the time he met other jazz musicians, he had developed
fingering that was all his own (the secret of oroginality?  And have I
mentioned Bix?); he was told it was all wrong, but, in his words, he
didn't feel like learning anew.  When he started playing in public, he
already was a "competent jazz musician; playing with professionals
mage him GREAT.
