Gary,

Keep after her. You might beat out the commercial c**p that is forced down
the kids throats these days. Maybe not quite as bad in France?

She should learn to transpose. Start her now.

Subject: [Dixielandjazz] Trumpet music

This is not really a post to comment on the mentorizing thread, yet it
may seem that way a bit.

In helping out with my daughter's end of the school year activities, I
was introduced to one of Leïla's classmates that plays a quite decent
trumpet. I was told to lower the mic as a student was going to play a
couple of tunes. I had to lower the stand about as far as it goes.
Well, I was pleasantly surprised when this 10 year old girl played a
couple of 'pop' classical pieces, a couple of waltzes and an Elton John
tune. She read perfectly. Ok, there wasn't anything too complicated,
but still . . .

I spoke with the young girl's father who says the family is not musical
at all. No one in the family plays anything aside from the girl's eight
year old brother that can get around a cello quite well. The father
just shrugs his shoulders and says; "We got lucky."

I asked the girl if she has listened to any jazz. She replied; 'some,
but it sounds so complicated.' Yeah, like the Haydn she played at the
assembly was cake. Anyway, I suggested that I find her the music for a
couple of jazz standards and some recordings for her to listen to. She
was delighted with the idea.

Well, I have a ton of fake books, but they are all in C. I don't have
the time right now to transcribe to Bb for her. Are there any Bb horn
players out there that can send me a couple of scans for some easier
standards for Bb instruments. I think the intro to West End Blues or
Donna Lee can wait a year or so. I'm open to anything, but would like a
small variety of styles. Tunes that come to mind : Indiana, Sunny Side
of the Street, and My Funny Valentine.

I'm going to use Band in a Box and record a CD for to play with and
we'll see what happens.

Merci en avance, Gary
