I just got a new Goldtone plectrum banjo and drove to New Orleans on
Saturday to try it out. I played for about 4 hours with the trumpet
player at Cafe DuMonde and then played with some guys in Jackson
Square. The banjo sounds great, and I made about $70 and got some free
beer.

To answer a few of the old posts:
1) If you play G7 as 2nd chord in the Bill Bailey 8 bar sequence (in the
key of Bb), it still fits ascending bassline Bb, B, etc. A bass line
does not have to consist of just roots - although roots are standard
75+% of the time.
2) A dominant chord in the key of Bb does not have to be F7. II7, for
example, is a secondary dominant .
3) I agree that B diminished is more common than G7 in as the 2nd chord
of the sequence (again in Bb), but it is used. B diminished is just a b9
substitution for G7.
4) I agree that the Bill Bailey sequence should be refered to as an 8
bar (instead of a 7 bar) sequence even though the 8th bars is up for grabs.
5) I am familiar with Aebersole, but I use band in a box and I jam my
brains out when the family leaves the house. I used to be able to solo
passably on the guitar and do some single note solos on the banjo.
Having said that, I'm willing to bet that I will be a ten times better
soloist on the alto sax in 6 months time than I ever was on banjo or
guitar. The sax was created for soloing. What an instrument!!!
