I also find Pink Martini a great model of old + new styling and diverse,
diverse, diverse; I heartily recommend it to all. Their expanded styling is most
accessable on Pink Martini's Sympathique, their first album and my absolute
favorite; I also recommend scouring all new music voraciously for stuff like
this. Sympathique was released almost 10 years ago. During the recording, the lead
singer, China Forbes was sprawled out on a sofa, suffering from a VERY BAD
cold, which made her sound like Shirley Temple in drag, but it seasoned her
voice just right (IMO), something that might not have been entirely recaptured in
subsequent recordings. Sympathique was given a rating of 5 stars, the
collective rating of 172 reviews, so it has wide appeal. They are all over the place
in the best way! My copy of Sympathique (1997) contains the cut "Bolero" which
is a wonderful track, but i understand the newer release does not include
this. Too bad because they made Bolero really fun. Every single cut on Sympathique
is REALLY enjoyable, filled with covers given a unique and lusty turn. China
Forbes has remarkable command, even prone from the sofa. This is less true on
Little Tomato album, which has more original material, but less variety. Live
is best. Buy used from Amazon, you'll pay less and maybe get the Bolero cut!
ALOHA!
