I wonder how many on this list are aware that there exists in the USA one
true jazz club devoted entirely to pre-war hot jazz? I'm of course referring
to the Landing in San Antonio. Are there others currently operating (besides
Fritzels)? Let me know.

At the Landing, the customers don't pay a lot compared to other "jazz" clubs
in major cities. The band gets a decent wage. If the audience is not
listening, Jim usually succeeds in getting their attention so they do. These
days it's a rare night when the ENTIRE club is ignoring the band, and that's
usually because they're all zipper-head members of a convention group that
wandered in post-meeting or something. Most of the time, most of the folks
are listening intently.

Your definition applies to clubs that feature so-called "avant" or post-bop
where the band is too hip for the room, and even the most sophisticated
listener has no clue as to what he/she is really hearing. And they do pay a
lot of money to be seen attending this so-called "hipness." And the players,
because they think Coltrane is God, are willing to work for $40 a night for
their "religion."

So with the Landing you get music that you can hum or whistle on the way
out, and at a reasonable price. What a deal.

Make sure we're there before booking passage. Special for DJML: email me
first.
