[Dixielandjazz] Rehearsal in public places

I want to thank everyone who contributed to the discussion on
rehearsing in public and to Elazar especially for starting the
thread. It made me start thinking differently about how much time
goes into rehearsals and whether the results you get for it could be
increased by producing gigs as suggested in that thread.

Most of my rehearsal experience is in the 'classical' area so the
idea of rehearsing in public never got to first base with me.
However, with a mountain of snow having fallen here (Toronto) and no
place to park near my place I decided to throw together a rehearsal
at a local service club's premises last night and bingo!

We got most of what I wanted to do done and the club members were
beside themselves in praise. One elderly lady got so carried away
singing (Chinatown, My Chinatown / Makin' Whoopee and a few more)
that we gave her the mic and the club went nuts. The club president
gave us two paid gigs out of the deal as well and I don't think that
will be the end of it.

I'm still dead set against musicians slitting there own and each
others' throats by playing for free at jazz establishments that
should pay (read The R*x - in Toronto!) but it won't be the last
time we rehearse in a public place that hasn't hired a band in a
while or a place that's never had a band or live music.

Again, thanks to everybody who contributes from their own experience
and wisdom to make this list so worthwhile

Cheers,

Ric
