50 miles on a good night and with a good antenna was about the maximum
distance. The signals would have been faint in any case and of course hope
there was only one station or two.
FYI there is a Crystal Set association that is on line. I believe they
publish a newsletter too.

When I was teaching Ham Radio classes I used a crystal set and the
electronic principles behind their operation. There is absolutely huge
theory that can be taught using one since about every basic part of radio
operation is there.
When I was a kid I built many of them. I also built one for my daughter.
She helped. We still have it and it still works. She still talks about it
occasionally.
How many electronic devices or anything else for that matter can a kid make
today that will work, cost almost nothing, won't pollute, doesn't need
batteries AND let them hear jazz (maybe).
