One-size-fits-all is a poor compromise for sure. Even within 78s the size
of a stylus that best plays back a record depends on the era of the
recording, sometimes on the company doing the recording, and also on the
degree of wear.

Are we sure the stylus is LP only? There was some attempt to make a
universal stylus with a shallow conical tip, which rode on the edges of
the groove, either standard or LP, and would play both. I figured that
would be how they solved the compatibility problem without a dual-
stylus cartridge. Bert Joss
