Some years ago when I was teaching at Missouri School for the Blind I
decided on doing a traditional instrument show. The criteria was that the
instruments either had to be strings or be bought or made for less than $15.
The group consisted of Washboard, Harmonica, Banjo, Guitar, Jugs and Washtub
Bass.
The kid that played the Washtub bass had perfect pitch and learned to play
it very well. We did such hits as Dead Skunk in the Middle of the Road,
some gospel tunes like I'll Fly Away and (sorry Pogo Fans) Boil that Possum.
All of the musicians were very good on their instruments and the performance
was very high quality. I might add that it was the most fun to do and the
audiences really liked it too. Real toe tappers.
