Jazz history explored at free, six-part Sacramento Public Library Series,
live-music, film,
and discussion series

The Sacramento Public Library will host a free six-part film, discussion,
and live music series, Looking At: Jazz, America's Art Form. The programs
will be presented at 6:30 p.m., Thursdays, September 6
through October 25, in the Tsakopoulos Library Galleria, at the Central
Library, 828 I Street, Sacramento.

The series will be moderated by Steve Roach, Director of Jazz Studies at
California State University, Sacramento; Vivian Lee, jazz vocalist and
recording artist; and Dr. Joe Gilman, Professor of Music at American River
College.

Each program will use short documentary films to engage the public in a
discussion of the cultural and social history of jazz as an art form in the
United States.

At the conclusion of each program, a free concert will be performed, based
on the jazz style featured in the evening's film and discussion:

September 6:
New Orleans: The Birthplace of Jazz, with Steve Roach.
Live jazz performance with the Fulton Street Jazz Band.

September 13:
The Jazz Age and Harlem as a Center of Jazz, with Steve Roach.
Live jazz performance with the CSUS Jazz Professors.

September 20:
Jazz Vocalists, with Vivian Lee.
Live jazz performance with the Vivian Lee Quintet.

September 27:
The Jazz Swing Era, with Steve Roach.
Live jazz performance with the CSUS Big Band.

October 11:
Latin Jazz and Jazz as an International Music, with Steve Roach.
Live jazz performance with the CSUS Latin Jazz Band.

The six-week series' grand finale event will be The Devine Divas of Jazz
Concert, at 6:30 p.m., Thursday, October 25, at the Central Library, with
popular local jazz vocalists Vivian Lee, Julia Dollison, Francesca Homan,
and Meleva Steiert; and musicians Aaron Garner, Shelly Denny, and Jimmy
Robinson.

The jazz history programs are part of the Sacramento Public Library's 150th
anniversary celebration activities.

The jazz series is part of a national initiative of Re.: New Media in
partnership with the American Library Association and Jazz at Lincoln Center
and with major support from the National Endowment for the Humanities.
