Dear David,
I did some additional composer research on this one yesterday.
Although it is well and truly in the Public Domain, having been 
composed in 1865, I've still not found the original author.
Just people who have claimed copyright on their 'arrangement', 
including three ASCAP members.
I will be interested in what you discover.
