Hello Dan,
I beg to disagree!
I'm not a musician, just a fan, but when I first heard Bix with
Frankie Trumbauer, my reaction was "WOW! What sound!" To a lesser
degree, this transpires also on the Wolverines' recordings (accoustic,
so less clear; moreover, that was earlier in his career, and he
probably improved with time). But on CDs (haven't heard the Mosaic
set) that special tone cannot be heard!
By the way, many years ago Broadway-Intermission records issued an LP
titled "It sounds Like Bix," with a plethora of contemporary (Bix's)
trumpeters emulating his sound. Some thirty years ago, I sent an
English frien a tape of music, which included "Nobody's Sweetheart" by
the Paul Whiteman Orhestra with Andy Secrest (9 October 1929), as a
"blindfold test." His identification was: "Bix," and he knew his
jazz!
Cheers,
Marek
