[Dixielandjazz] Musicians as Guests

Folks:

I think maybe we are only as good as the Gigs we accept, not because I
necessarily think we are any better than many other fine acts, but I
turn down more offers than I accept because I simply refuse to work
crappy insignificant gigs for people who really don't give a rat's
patootie and have no respect for professionalism. Life is just too
short, and I work far too hard as a band leader and booker to accept
less than reasonable and professional gigs. And of course I don't
always get a sit down dinner, and free booze, in the contract, but more
often than not I do because the kind of gigs I go for and accept
usually do treat us with great respect and dignity.

I have also turned down great paying gigs because the presentation and
nature of the gig would be insulting to the band no matter how good the
money is. So contrary to what some list mates think It is actually
not always about the MONEY with me. I look at the BIG PICTURE and
weigh all the circumstances of the gig offer before accepting or
turning it down.

Cheers,

Tom Wiggins

   Listmates,
  I'm with Steve and Elezar.
I might not offer the plumber dinner, but then again, I might. I
would
certainly offer him a beer. As Elezar notes, it may have something to
do with
music being appreciated as an art. But it also has to do with being a
friend to
one's fellow man.
  Pat
