The Californians Are Coming!
Three of the most prominent California trad jazz musicians will be together
in Maryland for an intimate concert at Calvert House Inn, Thursday May 10,
2007, from 7:00 to 10:00PM. Cornettist Corey Gemme, banjoist John Reynolds,
and Larry Wright on clarinet and other instruments will be joined by local
musicians David Sager and Tom Holtz for a showcase of Dixieland, swing, and
novelty numbers from the 20s and 30s.
Corey Gemme, currently with the High Sierra Jazz Band from Three Rivers,
California, has played in or led many bands in a variety of styles, from
Dixieland to swing to rock and roll. He led the band in which Larry also played at
Universal Studios Hollywood, offering versions of popular movie and TV
themes. His passion for the exactly right authentic style plus his indefatigable
chops have made him a contemporary legend in jazz circles.
John Reynolds and Larry Wright played at Disneyland together in the 1970s,
and performed on the Gong Show in 1977. John has toured Japan and
Australia, and has backed up Cab Calloway. As part of a quartet called The Palm
Springs Yacht Club he opened for Julie Andrews, Andy Williams, and the Smothers
Brothers. He is a talented artist and has drawn backgrounds for Nickleodeon
cartoon shows. He and his brother Ralf have delighted jazz festival
audiences for years in the zany Reynolds Brothers Rhythm Rascals. John just happens
to be Zasu Pitts' grandson, and he carries on the Hollywood entertaining
tradition as the world’s foremost Bilabial Fricatation artist. It wouldn’t be
surprising if he favored us with a number done as only he can.
Larry Wright has played with just about every Dixieland band in Southern
California, including the South Frisco Jazz Band and Night Blooming Jazz Men.
He has recorded for many groups on the Stomp Off Records label, and has played
with and led bands at Disneyland, Knotts Berry Farm, and Universal Studios.
He has also composed, arranged and conducted music for Hollywood media
projects using such musicians as the Royal Philharmonic of London. Besides
clarinet, Larry plays piano, sax, drums, banjo, and is the world’s foremost jazz
ocarina player.
Corey, John and Larry played together in Dean Mora's Modern Rhythmists for
ten years, riding the crest of the swing revival in the 90s at such Hollywood
venues as the famous Derby. They have also worked together with Johnny
Crawford (of TV’s Rifleman fame) in his big band, and in the Reynolds Brothers
Rhythm Rascals.
David Sager is the regular trombonist with Banu Gibson, and Tom Holtz plays
tuba with the Buck Creek Jazz Band.
$8.00 admission, $15.00 for couples. Calvert House Inn is located at 6211
Baltimore Ave (US-1), Riverdale, MD, and offers dinners, sandwiches, and
