Some years ago I recorded a tune that was an early 1920s English Hall
song.

I learned it from 3 different recordings of the song.

I sent a copy of the recording to a friend who had made one of the
recordings.

A few weeks later, I received a letter from an attorney asking for
residuals or (whatever they are called) for the recording. It seems
that my friend had copyrighted the song in the US, a song that he never
wrote) and now was collecting residuals on the use of it.

This was some 20-years ago and I paid the fee. If I had known then
what I know now, I would have ignored the letter.
