Well, the one time I met Tuba Fats (Washboard Chaz was with them at that 
time too, which was really great since I'd known him here in KC) they were 
certainly serious about getting what money they could.  They didn't want 
anybody just coming up to sit in so they could split the tips.  I was told 
they often made $100+ each a day.
