I can see why jazz isn't more popular with the general public.
People have been bombarded with pop music for decades which for
the most part is pretty diatonic. Learning to play pop music
isn't rocket science but it also isn't always easy to do either.
Jazz on the other hand, if you don't hear well, usually requires
some knowledge of music theory to solo well and to really
comprehend what is going on harmonically within the tune.
That being said is the reason why I am a big fan of
independent and alternative rock. They do some very interesting
things with the music. There are artists who are really trying
to break the popular music mold with genre mixing and other
elements.
