HI Steve and All;
Many festivals in Europe operate on a much different plain than US
Dixieland Festivals or Jubilees, I have played many shows in excavated
3000 year old Roman amphitheaters, in Italy and In Giant Ten Thousand
capacity Tents pitched on Soccer fields in other places, Italy likes to
hold their events in interesting historical places and there are many
amphitheaters all over Italy and Sicily that they make good use of.
I once played a concert in Agrigento in the evening where they had
erected a stage and lights and bleachers for seating in a Farmer's
field and the back drop was spectacular as the view beyond the stage
itself was of the Ancient lighted Temples in the hills surrounding the
valley. Played one in Pompei, thaqt was excavated from the ruins of
the totally buried city after the eruption of Mt. Visuvious. And
another on the Ilse of Lipari. with a view of two other live volcanos
in the background. Awesome and inspiring to say the least.
Did a show in a very large blocked off intersection of four streets in
Palermo, where they erected a big stage in front of the Chinese Temple
Museum which was also lit up beautifully as the back drop for the
stage, they like to show off their rich cultural history and historical
places and the Cultural folks work well with the event producers to
make them available.
The poor people and working class of Italy have more exposure to
American Culture than American do, and most of the festivals and
concerts are provided for free by the Departments of Tourism and
Culture and they certainly pay a lot better than Most American
Traditional Preservation Societies. But then again they reach out to
ALL the population and solicit their participation which brings them
much larger audiences and love and appreciation for the music.
Something that seems to be lost in America these days.
Cheers,
Tom Wiggins ( Music with No Borders)

Posted without comment except that they seem to roll up the
sidewalks in
Medford early on Saturday nights. :-) VBG. (see paragraph 9)
As contrasted with Red Sea Jazz Festival in Israel which starts at 9 PM
every night, ends at 1:30 AM and is followed by a monster jam session
which
runs from 2 AM to 6 AM.
Cheers,
Steve Barbone
