Pam:   The industry STANDARD for professionals are the SHURE SM 57 and SM 58. 
The 57 is more often used as an instrument mic, the 58 has a ball on the end 
and is more often used as a vocal mic but both are good, versatile, and 
rugged. You should be able to get either along with a chord for less than $100.00 
each at ANY reputable music store. They will last for years and sound fine.
