Subject: Sacramento Jazz Jubilee Report
Jim and I arrived home yesterday evening after a wonderful four days
at the Sacramento Jazz Jubilee. The weather was about 20 degrees below
normal -- just perfect for the outside venues. It all began with the DJML
"Bloody Mary Party". I am sorry to say there were fewer people attending
this year. (And by the way, where was Ben Folkes?)
One of the best surprises was the great sound of the Royal Garden
Trio. AND sorry we arrived a little late but in the middle of "Limehouse
Blues" with David Boddenhause, Tom Fischer and David Sager joining the trio.
They left the stage and the trio continued with their beautiful jazz. Then
for the final number, Banu Gibson and the three members mentioned were
invited back on stage and she sang "Digga Digga Do". WONDERFUL! I like to
hear a jazz violin anyway, and the cello was perfect in that it could reach
those deep tones reminiscent of a bass sax. We bought one of their CD's and
have already played it three times.
Speaking of bass sax, I was happy to see and hear Tom Saunders on
stand up bass and bass sax with Banu's band.
Bands we managed to see were Blue Street JB, Climax JB, Buck Creek
JB, Cell Block 7, the Traditional Jazz Band of Brazil, Bob Schulz Frisco JB,
River City Pub Crawlers with Bob Ringwald filling in on piano for Bonnie
Otto, Jim Cullum JB, Carl Sonny Leland Trio, High Sierra JB, Reynolds
Brothers Rhythm Rascals, Boondockers, John Sheridan with Becky Kilgore, Banu
Gibson and her New Orleans Hot Jazz, Nightblooming Jassmen, and Richard's
Two Beat Bombers, and Bob Draga with Becky Kilgore and Eddie Erickson.
We saw some bands more than once and missed several that we meant to
hear. Jim keeps telling me we just "can't do it all".
Two favorites were 1) The Boondockers... and here is why. Amid the
jokes and carrying on, there were wonderful talented musicians playing very
well. It was a very enjoyable way to end the evening. 2) The Rhythm
Rascals. Their band members switched instruments and played them all very
well. Fun AND GOOD music!
The Sunday morning Gospel session with Blue Street was beautiful and
inspiring. We usually hear the Nightbloomers on Sunday morning, but changed
up this year.
Then, the Nightbloomers on Memorial Day used a patriotic theme.
When a group of volunteers came in carrying eight U.S. Flags and stopped in
front of the bandstand while the band played "God Bless America" and the
National Anthem, I became teary eyed.
Regards...and looking forward to SJJ 2007!
