My brush with wax cylinders ended in disaster. When I was a kid about 10
years old we found in my friends garage an old phonograph with a large
basket of cylinders. The basket was one of those that was larger at the top
and small at the bottom and about three feet tall. We would play a cylinder
and put it on the top and reach down into the basket and get a cylinder near
the bottom. We were having a great time listening to the machine and
playing with it until I reached into the basket and ran a large splinter up
under my nail. OUCH!!! Thus ended my fascination with recorded cylinders.
