Cees responded:

    The surface that you burn can have various colors
     from black (never had any problems with them also)
     via red blue etc. Nowadays mostly silver is used.
     Or a gold color (e.g. Kodak discs). Of course 
     it's no real scientific test, but in my case the old
     golden ones never failed, independent of the brand.

My reaction:

	I need to get out more.  The only ones I recall seeing are silver.
