Dear Dave and Steve,

There must have been many "respectable" authors who wrote nasty things about jazz in its infancy. One is G. K. Chesterton, the English novelist and poet who wrote an essay entitled "On the Prison of Jazz".

The photograph of Django Reinhardt with a German army officer, mentioned in "The Nation" article, is reproduced in Michael H. Kater's excellent book ,"Different Drummers. Jazz in the Culture of Nazi Germany"(Oxford University Press, 1992).

An equally good volume is S. Frederick Starr's "Red and Hot. The Fate of Jazz in the Soviet Union" (Oxford University Press, 1983). The author was President of Oberlin College and a clarinet co-founder of the Louisiana Repertory Jazz Ensemble.

PS. Thanks to you both--and Steve, happy to have you back! Cheers.

Fred
