I prepare a set list only for a festival or a special concert...otherwise I
decide while playing one song what the next song will be. Since we play so
often for dancing...I have to read the audience to see what mood they are in. We
aren't reading charts so I leave very little time between songs. I keep the
banter to a minimum unless we are playing a show (jazz history with
demonstrations of the Charleston, Balboa, Collegiate Shag and the Lindy Hop).

We played a 9 hour gig a few years ago and never repeated a tune.....so I
guess we have no problem picking songs to play. Occasionally one of my sidemen
will suggest a tune, but most of the time they leave it up to me. We do get
requests from time to time....but these are usually from friends who hear us
often and have favorites they like to hear.

By the way, Frankie Manning is a wonderful guy and still a great dancer. We
see him here in Phoenix once a year where the Lindy Hoppers bring him out to
participate in dance clinics. I have photos of Frankie with my band...he is
very gracious.
