[Dixielandjazz] Public Liability

Unfortunately Craig yes it is becoming more and more popular for event
organizers and festivals to pass the buck on to make everyone involved
in the event supply liability insurance to cover their own obligations
and create even more potential pockets for the lawyers to go after. I
believe it got it's foothold when they started making food vendors and
ride vendors etc. have coverage in case someone got sick or food
poisoning or injured by the vendors operation.
Now it really gets weird when you dig into it and find that many City
run Festivals actually no longer have their own LIability policies.
They operate under the "Self Insured Banner" and take the chances that
nothing will happen, and if it should they have everyone else in the
event with mandatory insurance to cover most of it for them. Thus
avoiding the large premiums for themselves.
Things that cause this problem are events like the band that set of
fireworks indoors at nightclub in the N. East a year or so ago that
resulted in several hundred deaths. Sheer stupidity for certain and a
bit of common sense could have prevented the terrible tragedy, but alas
it did not and many intelligent and innocent folks are now paying the
price for it.
Sad state of affairs indeed.

Am I missing something or is the Public Liability Ins. requirement for
a band
unique
to Australia? What kind of thing is it supposed to cover? Is there
anything like
it
required in the US of A?
